News and Announcements
WELCOME TO SAINT THOMAS THE APOSTLE SCHOOL!
December 5, 2017
Thank you for your patience and understanding. The police have advised me that I am not permitted to share specific information regarding our crisis management plan. I have heard some of your concerns regarding procedure, so I can share with you those details.
I wanted to let you know as soon as possible that there was an intruder in the building. The person was in the building for 7 minutes and I specifically used the word “drill” to keep you from racing to the school to grab your child(ren). This would have made the situation chaotic and, although understandable, your presence would have taken our concentration off of our students.
We will return to business as usual. The suspect has been arrested and our protocols are being updated with specific suggestions made by the police. I am sorry this happened and I am grateful that everyone is safe and our procedures will be updated. I intended to meet with you, however, I was advised by the police that the investigation is ongoing and therefore a meeting is not advisable at this time.
For those of you who did not see the message that was posted on the school website last evening, I am re-sending it below.
Thank you for your prayers and well wishes.

We had an unfortunate incident in school today. A man entered the building through the front door, walked into an empty classroom, rifled through a teacher's bag, then left the building. I was quickly informed that there was someone in the building and I called a lock down and then the police. There was a very quick response, but the man fled the building. We have cameras in the building and I believe at this time that they have identified the suspect.
I am not trying to minimize the seriousness of this incident, but I would like you to know that at no time were your children confronted by this man or left unattended. The teachers were quick to respond to the alert, sheltered in place, and kept the students calm and safe.
These are drills that are practiced regularly. As a result of this breach, however, we are reexamining all of these drills and safety procedures. I think you know that there is nothing more important to us than the safety and well-being of your children.
One final note - although you may want to keep them close, if you don't send your children to school tomorrow, they will think you don't believe school is a safe place and they will be afraid. Please let them know that they are protected and loved.
Our website is a great tool to find out what’s happening at the school. It provides updates, monthly schedule highlights, information about what the children are learning in their class, HSA information and much more. Every form and fact sheet can be found there for your convenience.
- All students using Before Care must have a Before Care form (found on the last pages of the handbook) submitted to the school. A copy of the handbook can be found in the "Parent Portal" tab.
- ALL STUDENTS using After Care must have an After Care registration form on file before they can use the service. These forms are available on the school website in the Parent Portal tab.

Preschool: Boys and Girls are not required to wear a uniform. They should wear safe, comfortable closed toe shoes at all times, and clothing that allows for tumbling and playtime. An extra set of clothing should be kept in a zip-lock bag (with your child’s name on the outside) in the classroom.
Kindergarten: Specific information regarding uniforms can be found on our website. Belts are never necessary; any closed toe style shoe or sneaker is acceptable. Velcro is requested unless your child can tie his/her own shoe.
